1How do I become a Barber?
If you are not a barber in another state or country, you would need to complete a 1500 hour course in an approved barber school. You can start the application process through your Barber Portal.
2After completing the barber course of 1500 hours, what is my next step?
Ensure that you have received your graduation letter (transcripts) and barber school diploma from your school. Then schedule to take the examination in Nevada.
3Do my barber hours ever expire?
Yes, you must take the exam and get licensed 1 year after completing your training. If you do not take the exam and get licensed, you must complete a 250 hour refresher course.
4How do I get an application?
Simply create an account with us to access a free application through our Barber Portal. You may also pick up an application at one of the board offices with a $15.00. This deposit is non-refundable.
5How much does the exam cost?

6Where and when are the exams held?
The exams are held 6 times a year in Las Vegas, in the months of January, April, June, August, October, and December.
7Do you have a study guide or law book?
Yes, you can purchase a study guide and/or law book from a board office. You can also find all the Nevada State Laws under the heading “Laws, Rules and Regulations”.
8How do I know what time my examination is?
A letter will be sent to your mailing address after the deadline of the examination you registered for. The letter will tell you the time and location of the examination. You are to be there 15 minutes prior to the start time so that we may get you seated and ready to start the exam on time.
9What happens if I miss the examination?
If you miss the examination you are scheduled for, you forfeit your money and will have to reapply to take the next examination.
10Can I be excused from taking an examination that I am already scheduled for?
The only way to be excused is for Good Cause. Good Cause can be defined under NAC 643.005.
11What happens if I show up late to my examination?
If you show up late to your scheduled examination, you will have to reapply to take the next examination and your money will be forfeited.
12What if I fail only one part of the exam?
You will only be required to take the part of the exam you failed at the next testing time.
13What do I need to do to get my Nevada State Barber License?
After 1,500 hours in an accredited barber school or another state's current barber license, we require all applicants to take an exam that contains both a practical (shampoo, haircut, and shave) and a written/oral portion. You can start the process in your Barber Portal.
14Can I bring an interpreter to the examination?
Yes, you are allowed to bring an interrupter to the written portion of the examination with you. You MUST notify the Board that you are bringing an interrupter.
15Can I become licensed as a Barber in Nevada if I am licensed as a Barber in another State?
If you meet the requirements for endorsement, you would be eligible. If not, you would have to take and pass the Nevada Barber Examination (theory and practical).
16Can I go to school if I have a felony on my record?
If you have a felony on your record, you would first have to schedule a hearing with the Board. At that time the Board would determine if you would be allowed to attend Barber School.
17Can I become a barber in Nevada if I have a felony on my record?
If you have a felony on your record, you would first have to schedule a hearing with the Board. At that time the Board would determine if you would be allowed to become licensed in Nevada.
18How do I schedule a hearing for a felony on my record?
19If I have to go to a hearing for a felony, what paperwork do I need to bring?
You will need to bring copies of all paperwork to leave with the Board. You will need to bring all paperwork pertaining to the case. You will also need to bring final dispositions for all charges. You should bring at least 2 character witness letters. If you come to a hearing with no paperwork, the Board is going to ask you to reschedule for another hearing. They can not make a decision on your case without paperwork.
20I need to renew my license, how can I do that?
You can easily renew your license by registering an account with us and accessing your Barber Portal.
21I lost my barber license, how to I obtain another one?
You can obtain a duplicate license by filling out the required affidavit, submitting 2 passport photos, and a $20.00 fee through your Barber Portal. Or if requesting a duplicate by mail, print the affidavit fill it out and have it notarized, mail it to our office along with 2 passport photos and a $20.00 money order.
22What do I do if I have let my license expire?
You have two licensing periods to pay your renewal fee ($60.00) and the late fee ($60.00) to reinstate your expired license. (May 1, fourth year) After that, you must retake the exam. If you are found working under an expired license, you will be fined. You can easily renew your license online through your Barber Portal.
23How do I apply for a barbershop license?
Please create an online account with us to access your Barber Portal. Submit the completed application online 10 days prior to opening date. An inspector will contact you to conduct the inspection of your new barbershop. Once you pass the inspection, you can open for business.
24I have changed the location of my barbershop; I am the new owner of an existing barbershop; I want to change the name of my barbershop. What do I need to do?
Any time there is a change whether in location, ownership, or name of the business change, the owner must submit a new barbershop application and fee. In most cases, an inspection must take place prior to operating the business. Under NO circumstances are licenses transferrable. You can easily schedule and file the appropriate forms through your Barber Portal.
25Can barbers and cosmetologists work together?
Yes, as long as the salon/shop has been properly licensed by BOTH boards to accommodate both licenses.
26Can a Barber Student or someone with a license in another State work in my Barber Shop?
No. Anyone working in a barber shop in the State of Nevada must be licensed by the Nevada Barber Board. A student, wither current or a graduate shop has not taken the board examination, may NOT work in your shop.
27What will the inspector look for when they stop by my shop?
The inspector will be checking the shop license and personal licenses to make sure they are current. They will also inspect the shop and all the stations for cleanliness and sanitation requirements. It is always the licensees’ responsibility to make sure they are licensed, working in a licensed shop and following all the sanitation procedures.
28Does the Board accept cash?
No, the Board does not accept cash. The Board accepts all major credit and debit cards, as well as bank transfers for online processing. If paying in person, we only accept cashiers checks or money orders.
29Who do I make money orders payable to?
If you are doing business by mail, make money orders payable to Nevada State Barbers’ Health and Sanitation Board.
